This page houses the presentation I made to the Governor's Conference on Service and Volunteerism on Wednesday, March 26 2008.  I'm also posting links to online resources related to my presentation.

Three Types of Learning

As much as I'd like to tell you that training can do anything within an organization, it can really only change

  • Knowledge
  • Skills
  • Attitudes

Needs Analysis

I presented a very basic model for needs analysis:

1. Determine what result you are trying to achieve

2. Identify actions that will contribute to that result

3. Identify who will take those actions

4. Identify the information they will need to be successful in taking those actions

There are many more sophisticated models out there. Here are some to look at:

Methods

The taxonomy of communication methods I presented:

  • Tell
  • Teach
  • Train

Writing

It doesn't matter how brilliant your information is if your learner's can't read it.  There are some great writing resources online.

Readability

Readability is one good tool for judging how accessible your information is likely to be.  Learn more about readability here:

Storytelling

Early drafts of my presentation had information on storytelling vs. direct instruction.  It broke my heart a little to take it out, but time dictated something had to go.  Here are some links on storytelling in organizations I found interesting, just for fun.
